Extra – A Tour Of Our Ferienwohnung
Today’s Blog Entry
Here’s an extra post to give you a look at the Ferienwohnung or ‘vacation apartment’ that we rented for our stay in Grindelwald. This trip took place in 2008 and was before the real growth of VRBO and AirBnB, especially from an international perspective, so we rented through a well-known European company called Interhome. Interestingly this unit is still being managed by Interhome all these years later (2020) : Apartment Chalet Smaragd.
Upon our arrival at the Bahnhof in Grindelwald we walked about 100 yards up the main road to the Interhome office. Because of our travel timing we were still a bit early for check in, but the Interhome folks let us drop our bags in their office so that we could go and do some initial grocery shopping at the nearby Coop supermarket. When we got back to the office it was time to check in so we grabbed our suitcases and walked to our apartment, more or less just about a block away.
The unit, a one bedroom with full kitchen, was on the ground floor and had a lovely terrace looking out over the landscaped yard to the mountains beyond. As with most of our Swiss rentals over the years it was nicely appointed and spotlessly clean. It didn’t hurt that both the building and the furnishings were brand new.
As with all of our trips to Europe (except our honeymoon!) we relied completely on trains, buses, and even lake steamers for transportation during this adventure. Over the years we’ve found that it’s just a lot more fun for both of us if we don’t have to worry about insurance, fueling up, parking rules, and navigation with mysterious signage. Plus it means that we both get to enjoy the spectacular scenery!
