Day 26 – Trout At Triendlsäge
Today’s Adventure
On Thursday, Day 26 of this alpine odyssey, Cindy and I kept things simple. We chose a relatively short loop hike that took us through a forested area adjoining the town of Seefeld. We were able to walk straight from our hotel so there were no buses or trains to worry about.
We had a relatively late start thanks to our streamlined plans for the date. From our hotel we walked through the historic center of Seefeld via the Münchnerstraße until we reached the edge of town. For a moment it felt like we had taken a wrong turn as we ended up in a construction site but we soon found the start of the woodland trail just beyond the excavation.
The trail followed the river and the railroad tracks for a while before it climbed up and over a ridge. It then went over a cross country ski trail and dropped into the next valley. At the end of that descent we turned onto what looked like a forest service road that headed more or less back towards Seefeld.
After a short distance on this road we found our destination for the day – the Waldgasthaus Triendlsäge. This inn is operated by the family Triendls on the site of an old sawmill or ‘säge’ and thus the name. The barn that was built where the sawmill once stood is now used as a rustic events center for weddings, etc.

The Triendlsäge is relatively small and quite popular so we made reservations for 12:30. It’s rather unusual for country inns like this to take reservations for lunch, but when they do there must be a reason! We didn’t want to walk several miles only to find that there weren’t any tables available so I called first thing in the morning to make arrangements.
When making our reservation it was also recommended to let them know if we were planning to order their signature trout dish as they harvest the fish on demand each morning from the family pond. We both decided to go that route and found that the trout was obviously fresh and quite delicate.
After a decadent dessert of Kaiserschmarrn we walked across the road, past the event center, and back into the woods on the continuation of our trail. This trail segment, aptly named the Panoramaweg, took us to a ridge line where we had mountain views in all directions. We then re-entered town through a nice residential area and found our way back to the hotel.
All told we walked just under 5 miles with 925 feet of vertical in about 2-1/2 hours. Tomorrow will sadly be our last day of wandering before we head north to Munich, Germany, for our flight back to the US – we have one more hike planned, so stay tuned!
