Day 2 – Sabino Canyon Recreation Area

Today’s Blog Entry

Cindy and I started today with another hike, this time in the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, a US Forest Service property northeast of Tucson, AZ. We hiked the Bear Canyon to Seven Falls Trail, nominally 9 miles long with just over 1,000 feet of vertical.

The trail starts out at the visitor’s center, crosses some low foothills, and then climbs into Bear Canyon along a rocky wash before the inevitable switchbacks to gain elevation.

About four miles up the canyon the trail branches off to the spectacular Seven Falls formation. At certain times of the year (spring thaw and later in the monsoon season) there are actually water falls here, but today we had to satisfy ourselves the occasional still pool of water.

We completed the hike in 3.5 hours for an average of just under 25 minutes per mile. Given the rocky terrain and sometimes mysterious trail markings we were happy with that!
