Day 2 – The Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway

Today’s Blog Entry

After completing our hike in the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area Cindy and I consulted our map and realized that we weren’t all that far from the Mt. Lemmon Scenic Byway. Mt. Lemmon, at 9,159 feet, is the highest peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains.  We tried to visit Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley at the highest point on the Byway (we never pass up the chance to preview a ski resort, even if it’s not open) but as luck would have it they were holding an Oktoberfest celebration that day and there were cars parked *everywhere*.  We then backtracked a bit, literally because the road was so clogged with parked cars we couldn’t even turn around, and stopped at the Mt. Lemmon General Store for a souvenir hat and t-shirt plus a nice piece of their homemade fudge.  From there we made the long trip back to the valley floor for a quiet evening at our VRBO casita.
