Day 2 – A Walk Around Interlaken
Today’s Blog Entry
On Tuesday we started out with a train ride from Grindelwald down to Interlaken via Zweilütschinen. We spent much of the day on a self-guided hiking tour of both Interlaken and its lesser-known twin city, Unterseen. Unterseen, just to the west of Interlaken across the Aare River, attracts fewer tourists so it gives a much better idea of daily life in this part of Switzerland. We enjoyed seeing the architecture in both towns as it presented an interesting blend of German and Italian influences. We finished up with a late lunch at the Hotel du Lac.
The Aare River, which runs right through the center of Interlaken, connects the Thunersee (Lake Thun) and the Brienzersee (Lake Brienz). This location makes Interlaken a great regional hub for rail, bus, and even lake steamer travel. For this reason we’ve passed through Interlaken many times over the years and in fact returned to the area in 2013 for a seventeen day in-depth exploration of the Berner Oberland. We used the smaller lake town of Brienz (at the far end of Lake Brienz) as the base for that trip – you can read that blog here : Brienz 2013.
