Day 1 – The Faulhorn Mountain Hike

Today’s Blog Entry

It was only appropriate that we started our first day in Grindelwald with a two-stage gondola ride up to the ‘First’ overlook.  From there we took a long hike on a fairly well-used trail up to the Berghotel Faulhorn, which was located, as you might guess, on the peak of the 8800′ Faulhorn.  At the hotel we enjoyed a cold adult beverage on a spectacular sun terrace overlooking the surrounding Alpine peaks and valleys.

From there we followed a lightly used single track trail down through the village of Bussalp and finally into Grindelwald.  The trail was lightly used because it was very, very long and required a strenuous descent of almost 5400′.  We clearly should have just returned to the First gondola and ridden back down in comfort, but we’ll know that for next time!  We stopped briefly in town to pick up a few groceries and then went back to the apartment for a well-earned dinner.
