Day 3 – From Badia To Innichen
Today’s Adventure
Today we had a relatively relaxed start for our move from Badia to Innichen (a.k.a. San Candido). Cindy had arranged for an early check-in at the Zin Senfter Residence, but even so we couldn’t arrive but so early if we wanted to be able to go directly to our apartment. With that in mind we caught a 10:05 bus from Badia that took us on a twisty 45 minute ride down the valley to the main Bahnhof in Bruneck.
After arrival in Bruneck we had some time to spare before the train to Innichen so we decided to eat our lunch trackside on the platform. The Ustaria Posta, our hotel in Badia, had a very nice breakfast buffet so we took advantage of that with some sandwiches ‘to go’ with local bread, sausage, speck, and cheese along with some fresh fruit.
Our modern Südtirolmobil regional train left Bruneck for Innichen right on time (as usual) at 11:30 AM. On the 40 minute ride to Innichen we passed through some very familiar territory including the towns of Niederdorf and Dobbiaco, the latter being the basecamp for our first visit to the Dolomites in the winter of 2020. Upon arrival at the Bahnhof in Innichen we were met by Luca, the courtesy car driver for the Zin Senfter Residence. They had offered to pick us up so Cindy had wisely accepted their offer. It wasn’t terribly far from the train station to our hotel, but dragging our roller bags that distance just wasn’t all that appealing given the light drizzle that had been falling most of the day. Somehow we managed to fit our two large roller duffels, two good-sized backpacks, and three adults into a Mini Cooper for the short ride through town.
After checking in and dropping our bags we surveyed our apartment to see how it was outfitted in terms of appliances, utensils, and condiments. Armed with that information we headed out for a quick stroll and a trip to the nearby Despar grocery store. We ended up walking the pedestrian mall that winds throughout the Old Town section of San Candido and then heading up the walking trail towards Sesto. We passed the rather eclectic Parkhotel Sole Paradiso and made it to the point where the trail crossed under the Via Sesto before turning back to do our shopping.
The Despar supermarket in the Old Town section of Innichen is very new and very chic, so Cindy had no problems provisioning the apartment for much of our stay. As usual our strategy for this trip was to eat our main meal in a rifugio at lunchtime with breakfast and dinner in our apartment. In this case it was even easier because our lodging at the Zin Senfter included an expansive breakfast buffet, so Cindy could focus her shopping on dinner ingredients and a smaller selection of condiments.
After returning to the room Cindy finished unpacking and prepared us a lovely dinner of pork cutlets and spaetzle. We enjoyed dinner with a glass of a local Pinot Noir and settled in for a quiet evening to rest up for our outing the next day.
