Day 3 – Cayuga Seneca Canalway

Today’s Blog Entry

We started the day with a drive north to Geneva NY where we visited their lakefront visitor’s center. It’s an impressive facility with a wide array of displays and information about Finger Lake attractions. This weekend it was also the site of a very active open air market selling all kinds of local produce.

From the visitor’s center we drove to the nearby Bishop Nature Preserve. We parked there, set up the bikes, and followed a short path through the woods to the Canalway Trail. This trail runs along the Seneca River between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake. We rode the section between Geneva and Waterloo for a total distance of 15-1/2 miles.

After loading the bikes back in the truck we headed down the West side of Seneca Lake to the White Springs Winery. We grabbed a nice table overlooking the lake and enjoyed some adult beverages along with a light lunch of cheese, sausage, and fruit that Cindy prepared.

We then headed south along Seneca Lake and went cross country to the east side of Keuka Lake. We followed the shoreline all the way down to Hammondsport, a small town at the southern tip of the lake that we wanted to check out at some point during this trip.

We parked near the village square in Hammondsport and indulged in a pair of waffle cones from the Crooked Lake Ice Cream Company. We enjoyed the cones on a walk down to the waterfront before heading back to our campsite.
