Day 1 – Our Arrival In Seefeld

On the first day of our adventure we drove to the airport in Richmond, Virginia. From there we flew Delta Airlines to Atlanta for the big hop to Munich, Germany. Once we retrieved our bags and cleared customs at the Munich Flughafen we took the Deutsche Bahn (the German National Railway) to our final destination in Seefeld, Austria. There’s a DB station on the grounds of the Munich Flughafen so it was all quite easy – perhaps not as smooth as Geneva or Zurich, but still very good.

Once we arrived in Seefeld we walked a couple of blocks to our apartment, the Schonangerhof, and checked in. Tom, the owner of the apartment building, helped us tote our bags up to our top-floor apartment and made sure that we were going to be comfortable. It turns out that the apartment building, original constructed in 1947 as a farmhouse, has been in Tom’s family since new. It was converted to apartments in the 1970s and then renovated again just a few years ago. Our apartment had a full kitchen with combined dining/living area plus a large bedroom and a nice bathroom. We also had a large private balcony facing south.

After dropping our bags we headed back into the village of Seefeld for a late lunch and some grocery shopping. One of the great things we’ve found about renting an apartment vs. staying in a hotel is that you have much greater flexibility for meals – this trip we typically had our big meal of the day at lunchtime and had breakfast and dinner at home. Shopping for groceries also gives you a chance to see how the locals live, which is all part of the European experience. We had several nice stores to choose from but we did most of our shopping at one called ‘Spar’ – they had both a regular grocery store and a separate shop for gourmet items.

While we were in town we also stopped by the Tourist Bureau. Since we were staying in a property advertised on the Tourist Bureau’s website we were able to buy specially discounted passes that gave us unlimited use of the local buses and ski trails for the duration of our stay. These passes got a lot of use during the week!
